Dedicated to all the birthmoms who have not had a good adoption experiences,
for one reason or another, through the years.
They told her to relinquish
An attempt to extinguish
The mother-child bond
Failed to mention it would live on
By comparison she was no match
To the couple who was already attached
To the baby within her womb
Who'd be born through her, to them, soon
They had a house on a hill
Never struggled with paying their bills
Welcomed the joy a baby brings
Said over and over this was their dream
But they didn't know she had dreams too
Dreams so big, she hoped they'd come true
Mommy and baby was her family complete
The agency reminded love wasn't all she'd need
The couple promised the stars and moon
An open adoption was what they would do
They wanted to see her, again and again
But she must be known not as a mother,
only a "friend"
Everyone seemed to speak on her behalf
She felt contained, controlled, and trapped
By a pregnancy, an agency, and a couple thought chosen
Where was her voice, inside of her frozen?
The tearing of flesh
And face laced with sweat
Gown speckled with mother's blood
Is this the price of sacrificial love?
Birthing canal
Keep with the denial
Of the child that now lies
In reach of his mother's eyes
"Take the baby away!"
Was all that she could say
She was told it was best
To close her eyes and simply rest
Seventy-two hours went by
The after-birth long dried
She relinquished her rights
By signing that night
Three months down the road
Not one promise came true
What are you to do
when not one law protects you?
Betrayal, anger, hurt, and rage
Realizing the agency had only set the stage
Who will tells girl like her, that sometimes,
there is a better way?
Adoption can bring together families, and
extend them, it's true
And I hope I don't come off
as anti-adoption to you
But I must speak up, for the girls like above
Who go alone on vigils, silent crusades of love
They have rights, options, and choices
Listen closely, for they too, have voices
